Why People Pronounce It Differently

Is it “jah-la-PEH-no” or “hah-lah-PEH-nyo”? The jalapeño is one of the most recognized peppers in the world, but its name often sparks pronunciation debates.

In Spanish, the letter “j” is pronounced like an English “h.” That’s why the correct pronunciation is “hah-lah-PEH-nyo.” The little squiggle over the ñ (called a tilde) changes the sound to “nyo.” But in English-speaking countries, many people say “jah-la-PEH-no” — a spicy mispronunciation that stuck around.
